White mulberry is beneficial for diabetics
White mulberry is the best-known variety of this plant. Nowadays, from its leaves, substances are obtained that lower blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of atherosclerosis.
On the basis of white mulberry extract, dietary supplements for people with diabetes are prepared. Preparations of this type are also recommended as part of prophylaxis. The beneficial properties of white mulberry have been used in Chinese medicine many centuries ago.
Keeps sugar in check
White mulberry effectively maintains stable blood sugar levels. The chemical compounds that are derivatives of DNJ and DNJ (1,5 dideoxy-1,5-imino-D-sorbitol) are responsible for these properties. This alkaloid is soluble in water and occurs only in mulberry leaves. It works in such a way that it slows the breakdown of starch found in foods into simple sugars. As a result, postprandial hyperglycaemia is reduced.
It reduces the risk of complications
The effects of DNJ are supported by quercetin belonging to the flavonoid group. It affects the proper carbohydrate metabolism and sugar metabolism. It works in such a way that it inhibits the effect of an enzyme called aldose reductase, which is responsible for synthesizing sorbitol from the excess of glucose in the blood. Too high level of sorbitol in the body is conducive to complications of the nervous system, eyes and kidneys in people with diabetes. Quercetin provides additional protection to cell membranes, DNA and cells from damage caused by free radicals – by nature, as a flavonoid, it is an antioxidant.
Anti-cancer and antiatherosclerotic effects
White mulberry helps not only people suffering from diabetes. It also supports anti-cancer and anti-atherosclerotic prophylaxis. In the white mulberry leaves there is a methanol extract whose fractions inhibit the production of nitric oxide causing tissue damage, which may lead to the development of cancerous diseases. White mulberry also has antiatherogenic effects because it has antioxidant properties. In this respect, its action is based on the fact that it inhibits the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins. As a result, there is no increase in LDL cholesterol in the blood. Too high LDL cholesterol in the blood is one of the main risk factors for atherosclerosis.
Other pro-healthy properties of white mulberry
Mulberry leaves contain flavonoids and other chemical compounds with antibacterial and antiviral activity. They can help in the prevention of bacterial infections caused by, for example, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella bacteria. White mulberry leaf extract may help to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. This is the position of the scientific community which, studying the properties of white mulberry in this area, observed two interesting phenomena. First, in the course of the study, it was observed that the leaf extract of this plant inhibited the formation of b-amyloid 1-42 proteins. Secondly, it has a negative impact on already existing proteins of this type – it weakens their neurotoxicity. The b-amylodium 1-42 protein in the light of current knowledge are among the main factors influencing the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
White mulberry as a natural help for slimming people
White mulberry supports weight reduction in people suffering from obesity, which has been confirmed by clinical research. The study lasted 90 days and 46 people were divided into two groups. Participants in one group were given a placebo and the other group received 2.4 g of white mulberry extract each day. All participants had a diet of 1,300 kcal. It turned out that the participants who took the placebo only lost weight of 3.2 kg, and those who took the white mulberry extract lost about 9 kg. This is a significant difference encouraging the inclusion of white mulberry extract into the daily diet.
Extract from white mulberry leaves by inhibiting enzyme enzymes responsible for the breakdown of complex sugars, limiting their conversion into glucose. The level of sugar in the blood does not rise sharply. There is no situation in which the excess sugar is used as a reserve material in the form of adipose tissue.
Dietary supplements with white mulberry
White mulberry can be used as a slimming aid in only one form – as a plant extract. White mulberry leaf extract is a basic element of the recipe of coated tablets. In the role of herbal raw material, powdered mulberry leaves are used. The preparation must be taken daily before a meal, usually at a dose of one tablet three times a day.
