Obesity treatment causes and effects
Obesity is a complicated chronic disease. It arises from many different causes and does not disappear without treatment. There is no one, wonderful agent for obesity. Treatment of obesity is difficult, long and requires the use of different methods tailored individually to each patient. Check what are the causes of obesity and how to treat it safely.
Obesity was recognized as a disease more than 50 years ago.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has included it on the International List of Diseases and Health Problems (the so-called ICD10 classification) under the code E66. In Poland, this list has been in force since 1996 and every doctor has it in his desk. When placing a diagnosis for a patient, he / she must enter the appropriate disease code into the card.
Obesity is one of the most dangerous and complicated chronic diseases.
Many factors contribute to its formation. environmental (eg poor nutrition, low physical activity), psychological, genetic and hormonal. Each patient may have several or even a dozen. Determining the factor / factors that cause obesity is a long process and requires individual diagnosis for each patient, and subsequent effective treatment of personalized methods and tools. What’s more, research on obesity is still revealing new causes that can lead to this disease.
Obesity begins with overweight.
That is why specialists call it a pre-Eight or a pre-innate state. Overweight is a state in which we provide the body with food with significantly more energy than it needs for proper functioning, including basic metabolism, heat production and physical activity. Our economy well organism, so as not to waste this extra energy, it begins to store it in the form of adipose tissue. He plans to use it in the worst times when he will not have access to food. And if these do not come, fat stores simply grow.
This additional body fat composition is collected in different parts of the body. In men, most often on the stomach. Hence the name of the so-called abdominal obesity, apple obesity. In women, adipose tissue is usually located around the lower part of the abdomen, on the buttocks and thighs. Therefore, it is also referred to as buttock-leg obesity, pear type obesity. Remember, however, that in all types of obesity, this store adipose tissue is a visible symptom of the disease, not its cause.
Being overweight is a state in which we should light a red alarm lamp, something is going wrong with the body! If we do not start treatment in time, overweight may develop into obesity disease – I, II and III degree, i.e. obesity is enormous.
Three methods are used to determine the stage of development of obesity disease
1. Determination of body mass index, or BMI (Body Mass Index).
BMI determines the amount of body fat. To calculate BMI, you should divide body weight – expressed in kilograms, by height squared – in meters. Example – if you weigh 65 kg and measure 1.70 m, your BMI is – 65 (1.70 x 1.70) = 22.4. But, be warned – the BMI index is not reliable in pregnant women, athletes, people with extensive muscle tissue, growing children or the elderly, in whom it is difficult to properly determine the increase.
Full BMI classification by the World Health Organization (WHO)
– less than 18.5 – underweight
– from 18.5 to 24.9 – correct weight
– from 25 to 29.0 – overweight
– from 30.0 to 34.9 – 1st degree obesity
– from 35.0 to 39.9 – second degree obesity
– above 40 – third degree obesity, also called giant or malignant.
2. Measurement of fat content in the body
It can be performed only with the use of special weights or similar devices that are more and more often available in medical and dietary offices. Overweight is diagnosed when the body fat content is 20-25% in men and 30-35% in women. Indications above these standards mean obesity.
3. Measuring the waist circumference
The waist circumference is simply the widest place within your abdomen. With a large accumulation of body fat, it is often difficult to find and properly measure. You can ask your doctor for help and learning the measurement. If your waist measures between 80-87 cm (in men 90-94) – you are overweight when it is equal to or greater than 88 cm (in men 94) – you are already suffering from obesity.
Environmental factors that can lead to obesity are those related to our everyday life – including family life, private and professional life. So it’s not just about eating foods that have too much fat, or avoiding movement, but for many other reasons that can lead to overweight and obesity, which we often do not even realize. Their list is quite long, so we’ve divided it into several sections.
1 / Incorrect nutrition, as well as family habits of preparing and eating meals, including
– eating meals too rich,
– eating products with too high energy density (foods that in 1 g contain a large amount of calories, mostly due to high fat and sugar content),
– too frequent eating of meals without 3-4 hour breaks between them,
– irregular eating and eating between them
a stock of e.g. sweet or savory snacks,
– disturbances at the time of eating meals,
– not eating breakfast,
– eating one meal a day – e.g. after finishing work,
– too late eating dinner – should be consumed at the latest 2 hours before bedtime,
– drinking sweetened beverages,
– not eating vegetables,
– unwillingness to try new products.
2 / Incorrect food purchases, incl
– highly processed products that supply large amounts of calories in small quantities,
– products with preservatives, enhancers, artificial colors,
– fruit and vegetables whose development has been assisted by chemical agents,
– choosing a product with its price – not always, but often the cheapest products contain the most unfavorable fats and sugars, and not enough healthy dietary fiber,
– false information in passwords advertising food.
3 / Low activity
The development of civilization, including food production, sales methods and new technologies has meant that we are also moving less and less to obtain food. We no longer need to hunt for it (including the one in the store), bake, collect, and even drive to the store. All you need to do is enable the right application on your tablet or phone, select the right products and order them and bring them home. And in this way, instead of a few hundred or a thousand steps, thanks to which the body would use energy, we make a few clicks or touches with a finger that have nothing to do with physical activity.
4 / Stress
A fast pace of life, competition at work or the need to make the right standard on which our pay depends, the desire to provide a family with being, to meet our own and other requirements, and to have more and more items that we believe are vital to life. These and many other factors make us live under increasing stress. In order to get it, we often reach for products that give us a false sense of peace, a better frame of mind. Remember, however, that what drives us when we start to eat stress is not hunger, but the appetite. Hunger is the physiological need to eat food to keep the body alive. And the appetite is the desire to eat something that, as results from our experience, brings us relief and pleasure.
