During sports training the body loses large amounts of water, so it is important to regularly topping up fluids to avoid dehydration. Many people then take isotonic drinks. Isotonics, however, they have both supporters and opponents. It should be clarified what are isotonic drinks, and when it is good to use them.

First, we need to explain the difference between isotonic and energy drinks. Some people mistakenly assume that these two names are for the same product. In such a situation aversion to these drinks is fully understood. Energy drinks are certainly not the best way to hydrate the body. Their main aim is to stimulate the body and reduce physical fatigue. Additionally, energy drinks improve concentration. The secret of their actions are such ingredients as caffeine, taurine, B vitamins and sugar. Unfortunately, the effects of energy drinks are short-lived, and then there is an even greater feeling of fatigue. You should take such beverages only as a last resort. Sports drinks have two main objectives: hydration and supplement the minerals that the body loses during intense exercising. Isotnics contain a lot of sodium, which helps the absorption of water, supports maintaining electrolyte balance, and helps maintain normal body temperature during exercising. The isotonic drinks is also rich in potassium, which is needed for proper processes occurring in the nervous and muscular system.

A proper work of these systems are also affected by other isotonics components – magnesium and calcium. Magnesium, like sodium, helps to maintain proper body temperature. Sports drinks also contain easily digestible carbohydrates, such as glucose, fructose, sucrose or maltodextrin, which is an important source of energy, which is very needed during training. To complement the level of carbohydrates is recommended especially during a long workout, because in the case of shorter trainings it is sufficient just to supplement fluids. Of course, the electrolyte content in energy drinks does not mean that you can replace with them healthy food. It is worth remembering that sports drinks, like energy, contain chemical additives. This problem can be resolved by preparing a home-made isotonic drinks. For this purpose you need 0,5 liters of water, 2-3 teaspoons of honey, the juice of half a lemon, and a pinch of salt.

In summary, isotonic drinks and energy are different products. They differ in composition the way they work. For athletes isotonics have special significance, in some cases they allow for quick replenishment of electrolytes. Of course, these drinks are only a dietary supplement.
