Is it worth using salt from Himalayas for weight loss? People ask me if Himalayan salt is better than traditional salt. It is actually hard to answer this question. I could do this if I literally went to Pakistan, bought Himalayan salt, brought it to Europe/USA and tested in a laboratory to compare with our salt. If I did all of this, I could say which salt is better, but I don’t know. When you buy Himalayan salt, you actually buy a pig in a poke, as you have no idea what’s inside.
One is certain – this thing inside is salty. Many people use Himalayan salt for weight loss and claim it works. I am more skeptical in such an assessment. I believe that in this case, only placebo effect works. Interestingly, some time ago a study was carried out, which proved how it works. There were to groups of people. All of them suffered from migraine. One group was administered a painkiller and the other group was administered simple candies without any values. After some time the effects were measured. In both groups, after the application of the pill pain disappeared equally quickly. This is how placebo effect works.

Himalayan salt contains around 84 elements or at least it is praised for that. In today’s post I will discuss the questions I received in one of e-mails. Is Himalayan salt a good idea for weight loss? The answer is simple. Himalayan salt does NOT help. Buying Himalayan salt for weight loss is simply wasting money.

Salt from Pakistan would have labels in the local language and only next to it, the label with Polish information. Another thing, I read on the label that there are nuts in the composition of Himalayan salt. Does this mean that nuts grow underground? This is ridiculous!
WHO, i.e. World Health Organization recommends that a daily dose of salt should not exceed 5 grams, i.e. one teaspoon. I assure you that we eat this amount every day in various products, even in yogurts or biscuits.
Himalayan salt is not effective for weight loss. Its health benefits are also doubtful. However, there is one common quality that joins Himalayan salt and common salt. Himalayan salt, similarly to common salt in majority is composed of sodium. Some people argue that polonium may be found in Himalayan salt as well as uranium radium or plutonium. Well, since Himalayan salt contains all chemical elements from periodic table, there also need to be the elements that are harmful for people. The question is, what is the concentration of these harmful elements? How many of these elements Himalayan salt contains? We may compare it to the common saying that in large cities there is motor traffic, industry and air contamination. Therefore, let’s all watch for contamination, because we may get poisoned, let’s wear chemical overalls and masks. This is nonsense. Many products contain harmful substances, but it very small amounts, which do not poison our organism.
For sure many people wonder why Himalayan salt is pink. It certainly looks more effective than common white salt. This color stems from the presence of iron oxide.

Many people believe that Himalayan salt is the healthies in the World. I rebut this myth with two arguments. Firstly, if Himalayan salt was so extraordinary, its price would be extremely high. The majority of people use salt, so everyone would like to use the best type and the deposits of this salt would be quickly depleted. Higher need means lower supplies and higher price. This is the basic rule of economy.
Himalayan salt is mined 500 meters underground in Pakistan. Each kind of salt consumed in excess is harmful for people. Also Himalayan salt when consumed in high amounts may be dangerous. Many people think that they don’t eat a lot of salt, so it cannot be harmful. The problem is in the way of eating or rather what producers add to food. The majority of food producers add a lot of salt to their products for various reasons, e.g. due to taste values, to extend durability, for preservation. Personally, I always laugh at pub’s owners who willingly provide salty nuts as a free snack. Someone would think that it is so nice, but in fact, these nuts are not there by accident. They are supposed to stimulate appetite. Salt in these nuts will make a customer order 2, 3 or even 4 beers. Isn’t it a good marketing trick?
It is worth highlighting why the excess of salt is not beneficial. The excess of salt causes problems with hypertension, water retention and kidneys. What about iodine contained in salt? It is a precious nutrient, which is essential for the organism. How should we provide it from other sources if we don’t use salt? It’s simple. Iodine is not only contained in salt. It may also be found in other food products, such as fish, seafood or eggs. Interestingly, 81 elements contained in Himalayan salt are not really necessary for the human organism or at least the majority of them. Human being utilizes only 28 elements and the rest is not assimilated by the organism. Common salt provides the organism with more iodine than Himalayan or sea salt. Iodine plays an important role in our diet. Its excess is bad, but its deficiency is also not beneficial.
Improper amount of salt in a diet may lead to hypothyroidism. European salt since 1996 has been additionally enriched in iodine. Artificial enrichment in salt results from low-class soils.
Have you ever thought why there is a validity date on salt? It is obtained from mines which are hundreds years old, so why when we buy it, there is an expiry date? The date provided on the packaging of salt is related to the durability of the anticaking agent. Apart from this, as already mentioned, salt is enriched in iodine, the expiration date of which is also determined. After this time, salt loses the content of iodine.
