1. Ketogenic diet
The ketogenic diet was created in 1924, but only in recent years has it become a nutritional trend. It is a type of high fat and low carbohydrate diet that recommends supplying 10 percent energy from carbohydrates, 20 percent from protein and 70 percent from fat. Initially, it was used to treat drug-resistant epilepsy. As a result of almost total elimination of carbohydrates from the diet, the body has to draw energy from fat and is introduced into a state of ketosis – a situation in which the brain fuel is ketone bodies produced in fat metabolism, not glucose, as is the case in the classic diet. The growing popularity of ketogenic diet results from the decline of the theory about fattening effects of fat and the increasing number of reports about the harmfulness of carbohydrates. High-fat diets are becoming very fashionable, because they allow you to get rid of excess body fat more easily, have a positive effect on your health, regulate your blood glucose level and help reduce insulin resistance. A ketogenic diet also allows for faster muscle recovery, which is why some athletes use it. It should be remembered, however, that the ketogenic diet is very restrictive, and if used improperly, it can lead to ketoacidosis. In its classic version it is difficult to comply with and requires introduction by a doctor. On its own, you can apply its less restrictive variations.
