A few words about the potato itself

The Yacon potato, or more precisely Smallanthus sonchiflius is a tuber vegetable that is very popular in South Africa. Its appearance resembles sweet potato, though it tastes like a pear. The fruits of this plant are used in gastronomy, and the syrup obtained from them is an excellent sugar substitute.

Analyzing the composition of this plant, you can be really satisfied – in addition to the almost 20 different amino acids contained therein, there are, among others: fiber, magnesium, iron, beta-carotene and vitamins A, B1 and B2.

In what cases should I use yacon?

These potatoes, despite their small publicity, have a very wide application in treatment. Yacon tubers are used as a diuretic, while leaf decoctions are successfully used in the treatment of inflammation of the kidneys, bladder and liver. The leaves used to make tea are used as a preparation for diabetes. What’s more, both the roots and leaves of this plant help in reducing pressure, alleviating seizures or reducing excessive stress.

Among the enormous indications for treatment yacon potatoes should be specified

– obesity;

– constipation;

– insomnia;

– arthritis;

– digestive problems;

– elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels;

– arterio-sclerosis.

Properties and dosage

Research shows that yacon’s roots are a very good source of prebiotic substances (here referred to inulin) and fructooligosaccharides – plant sugars. Their task is to improve the work of the digestive system, as well as to maintain the proper conditions of the natural environment for the bacterial flora.

In addition, it has been proven that yacon positively affects the level of cholesterol in the blood, thanks to which it improves the lipid profile of the body. At the moment there is no information that would prove the negative effects or contraindications to supplementation with this preparation.
