A recently published report by the International Health Organization (WHO) on the nutritional status of younger residents of thirty-nine European countries and North America indicates that when it comes to the problem of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents, Poland is at the forefront. As many as 29% of Polish eleven-year-olds struggle with the problem of excessive body mass. The worst thing about all this is that unfortunately, nothing indicates that the situation will change in the near future. The media campaigns and appeals of doctors and dieticians will be of no avail if parents do not take their meals for the way they feed their children.
Undoubtedly, the habits of children and adolescents are influenced by messages broadcast from advertisements of various, most often low-value food products. The young consumer is an extremely attractive recipient for food producers, therefore, for a long time, advertising has been designed in such a way that it would attract the attention of the youngest. However, parents have a decisive influence on the way children feed, regardless of whether they pay attention to this issue or simply neglect it. Thus, the responsibility for the epidemic of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents lies precisely on the shoulders of parents should they face this responsibility.
