Kiwano is one of the varieties of cucumber, which is usually referred to as African or barbed. Of course, the natural place of occurrence of this species is Africa, ranging from the areas of the Cape Verde to the northern part of Sudan, nevertheless it was also kiwano also found in the Arabian Peninsula, where mainly talk about Yemen. African cucumber is characterized by an extremely original appearance, the oval fruit is covered with yellowish-orange, thick skin with spikes reminiscent of those on chestnuts. However, under this outer layer there is a delicate and juicy pulp, whose taste is confusingly similar to kiwi and banana. The name kiwano comes from combining the names of these two fruits. So far, the popularity of this plant in Poland is small,but more and more often you can come across spiny cucumber in some health food stores.
The cucumber has been sown, like a large part of tropical fruit, is characterized by an extremely diverse composition, based on numerous micronutrients. Spiked cucumber has a large dose of healthy elements, where zinc, phosphorus, manganese, potassium, calcium or iron, among others, come to the fore. Kiwano is also a rich source of ascorbic acid, which is commonly known as enhancing the immunity of vitamin C. What’s more, African cucumber has many B vitamins, folic acid as well as retinol, which is extremely valuable for human skin and eyesight vitamin A. In addition , kiwano is characterized by low energy value, which is extremely important for people on a diet.
Kiwano turns out to be a plant that can be successfully used in food plans for people with numerous health problems. All thanks to the large amount of ingredients contained, which allows us to assume that spiky cucumbers can have a beneficial effect on the proper functioning of the heart and liver. African cucumber also has a strong cleansing effect, which is conditioned by the diuretic nature of this plant. It is also worth mentioning again the low calorie content of kiwano, which results from the presence of small amounts of fatty compounds and carbohydrates. Kiwano can therefore be successfully used in low-energy diets, which are aimed at reducing excessive body weight.
Kiwano fruit is used as an ingredient in many different meals. Plant pulp can be consumed directly, with a spoon straight from the inside of the plant, but also can be used as a variety of salads or cocktails.
