What exactly is yerba mate?

This is an infusion of the leaves of yerba mate, traditionally eaten, among others in Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay or Brazil, and today it is already known around the world. Not only natives reach for the yerba – so many different yerba species come to foreign countries, thanks to which everyone can find something for themselves. A standard brew has a rather specific taste and is bitter, but there are also milder varieties on the market, good for beginners.

Yerba owes its popularity to stimulating properties. It is often written about it as an alternative to coffee. Yerba also contains caffeine, but works differently than coffee. After drinking coffee for some time, we feel agitation, but with the next hours our energy level drops. Yerba works differently; it’s more like tea, so you can sip it out all day long and keep your energy high. Caffeine contained in yerba is called matein. Its consumption is slightly healthier for the body, because it does not burden the digestive system (especially the liver), and moreover, the mateina can not be addicted.

Yerba mate and cancer

In recent years, there are more and more studies indicating the relationship between drinking yerba mate and increased incidence of esophageal cancer. However, several facts need to be corrected. First of all, the temperature affects the development of esophageal cancer. When hot drinks constantly pass through the throat, we damage the mucosa, which means that all microorganisms can easily enter our body. Then drinking yerba can actually hurt us, because through the mucous membrane we can also provide the body with less desirable compounds. The solution is to drink lukewarm or cool yerba.

Much is also said about relationships that were detected in yerba, i.e. PAHs. They are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that can also be found in tobacco and in the air with poisoned exhaust. Studies show that PAH may be conducive to an increased incidence of cancer. So how is it with health yerby mate? It turns out that the consumption of cold infusion prevents the unwanted action of PAHs, but nevertheless we should carefully use yerba. Especially people with various ailments should be especially mindful of it, for example with peptic ulcer disease or people with weakened liver. Any weakness of the organism is conducive to the entry of dangerous substances that can be used to harm us for a longer period of time. It is better not to drink yerba after consuming alcohol – the body needs to regenerate, so the liver needs more time, which can also affect the faster absorption of PAH-type substances into our body.

You should not eat yerby together with other stimulants. If you regularly drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes, give up the holly infusion. Your body is weakened and other parts of the body are exposed to cancer. Studies show that drinking yerba and smoking at the same time can lead to bladder cancer.

Yerba mate and pregnancy and breastfeeding

Caution when eating yerba mate is also recommended for pregnant women and breastfeeding women. Although the content of caffeine in yerba is relatively low, regular drinking of the brew may promote the stimulation of the child. It is therefore worth reducing the yerba at least partially, and any doses consumed during the day, consult your doctor.

To drink or not to drink?

In the case of yerba, the most important is the method of brewing and the temperature of the infusion. If we consume the yogurt in accordance with the recommendations and avoid drinking it during periods of weakening of the body, it will certainly bring a lot of benefits to our body. Yerba not only stimulates the action, but also promotes purification of the body, increases immunity and provides the body with many valuable vitamins and minerals. On the other hand, it is good only for healthy people – it can cause even more damage to patients. It is worth remembering.
