Intestinal health – what to eat, to work efficiently?

Well-functioning intestines are well-being and health, if they function badly, there is no question of well-being, resistance to various types of diseases or regular visits to the toilet. We support our intestines efficiently by consuming bacteria and probiotic yeasts called probiotics and food for these microorganisms referred to as prebiotics. Silage is the leader in terms of content, but they are not the only product that is beneficial to our intestines. 

In addition to the popular sauerkraut (sauerkraut) and pickled cucumbers, it is worth trying other pickled delicacies, for example kimchi or beet leaven. Pickled vegetables can be combined with various spices, including bay leaf, English herb, cumin and pepper, garlic and ginger, as well as basil, coriander and dill. Pickled vegetables can replace a portion of vegetables on a dinner plate. They combine well with groats and potatoes as well as with fish and meat dishes. Equally popular in our country are fermented milk products such as yogurt, kefir and buttermilk.

Healthy intestines – a healthy body 

Care for healthy intestines is extremely important because their condition affects the overall health. The intestinal problems are evidenced by digestive ailments such as flatulence, constipation, abdominal pain and diarrhea, but also lack of immunity and frequent bacterial, viral and fungal infections, slowed metabolism, chronic inflammation and sleep disorders. Dietary and health related intestinal neglects contribute to the dysfunction of the absorption of vitamin and mineral components, and consequently to deficiencies. It is in the intestines that the intestinal villi penetrates nutrients into the bloodstream. 

Not without significance for the functioning of the intestine is the widespread use of antibiotics, whose current generations are destructive to the intestinal flora (microbiota), causing dysbakteriosis, and then significantly changing its composition in favor of unfavorable microorganisms (eg, overgrowth Candida Albicans) – return to normal after antibiotic therapy 

even with proper nutrition it can take many months. Also, the consumption of highly processed products enriched with preservatives and other artificial food additives, as well as products contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, toxins significantly destroys the good intestinal flora and allows colonization by undesirable pathogenic bacteria or fungi. 

Dangerous leaky bowel syndrome 

Intestinal leak syndrome is a disease that develops under the influence of such etiological factors as chronic stress, frequent drug use, deficiency of zinc and vitamin D, low intake of precursors and glutathione production necessary to protect and restore intestinal mucosa and low levels of hydrochloric acid. The development of intestinal leak syndrome is also caused by an incorrect diet and some people eating some vegetables, including Solanaceae that can cause damage to the intestinal mucosa. 

Diagnosis of this disease is carried out by performing a test – lactulose or mannitol. The disease in question causes the body’s inflammatory response, sleep disturbances, headache and fatigue, overweight and diabetes, increased appetite for sweets, allergies, skin disorders, constipation and diarrhea, gases and flatulence, and reduction of gastric acid activity and reduction of pancreatic enzymes. 

To make matters worse, intestinal leak syndrome may become a substrate or an additional factor supporting the development of diseases such as Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, autoimmune diseases, depression and liver disease. The last three disease entities seem to be seemingly unrelated to the intestines, but given that the intestines account for 75% of the body’s resistance and produce 90% of total serotonin, the relationship between these diseases is obvious. In contrast, liver disease can develop under the influence of toxins penetrating the intestines into the bloodstream, which are a big burden on this organ. 

Bowel condition and obesity 

Another important reason for taking care of a healthy intestinal diet is the relationship between poor bowel condition and the development of obesity. In a healthy person, the contact of nutrients with the intestinal mucosa leads to the production of satiety hormones. Deficiencies of these hormones are noted in people suffering from overweight and obesity – in their case the satiety signal reaching the central nervous center is very weak. 

Bacterial flora also has a significant influence on the intestinal condition. Changes in the intestinal bacterial flora increase disturbances in the proper absorption of fatty acids and carbohydrates. 

The intestinal regeneration process 

The intestinal regeneration process is extremely difficult and sometimes many years old. Sometimes changing the diet for a healthier intestine, more rich in natural probiotics and prebiotics may not be sufficient and it is necessary to interfere with the physicians, based on the introduction of appropriate pharmacotherapy. 

However, in the prevention of intestinal diseases, it is worth eating products, such as the silages discussed at the beginning, as well as dairy probiotic products – for example, kefirs and probiotic yoghurts. A common feature of these products is the content of live cultures of bacteria and probiotic yeast surviving the entire digestive tract, colonize and support the intestinal function. After penetration into the intestines, these microorganisms multiply favorably affecting the functioning of the intestines. These types of microorganisms are not pathogenic – they have the ability to live and reproduce in the intestine, where they have a positive effect on the condition of the intestines through 

– synthesizing nutrients (including some B vitamins, vitamin K), 

– improving the functioning of the intestinal mucosa 

– relieving the symptoms of lactose intolerance 

– reducing the risk of allergy 

– improvement of the lipid profile 

– an immune function by stimulating the immune system 

Probiotics living in the intestines also help to reduce the risk of developing certain cancers.
