Good, because homely (and ecological) – fashion for a home garden

In the countryside, having your own backyard garden is something obvious. You do not need to convince anyone that it is worth having your own growing of seasonal vegetables. The home garden changes from late spring until late summer. The first vegetables hit the plate in May.

People with a bit of space on the plot can use it to set up a greenhouse. In the greenhouse grow tomatoes, peppers, as well as lettuce and radishes, which can only grow in the garden in summer – in May it may be still too cold. A smaller vegetable garden is a 5×2 m plot. It should be a very sunny place, sheltered from the wind. Vegetables will grow best on soil that is permeable, fertile and quickly heats up. Humus soil has a dark brown or black color and its fragments of dead plants are visible in its structure. Growing vegetables will easily take the necessary nutrients from the soil.

Determination of soil pH

Plants differ in terms of soil acidity. Its determination will allow to determine whether selected vegetables will grow well in a vegetable garden, or whether it requires the use of a suitable mineral fertilizer. The chemical or electric acidmeter helps to examine the soil reaction. A value of 4 to 6.5 pH indicates acidic soil, a value between 6.5 and 8 is appropriate for alkaline soil.

Soil loosening

Before planting a home grown vegetable, it is necessary to loose the soil previously cleaned of stones and plants. The topsoil of the soil should be fluffed with a spade through the so-called digging the garden (in colloquial language). The tiller will perform well in a larger area. The loosening of the soil structure allows it to be filled with air and water necessary for plant development. The next step is raking and the possible use of fertilizers. The main purpose of owning your own garden, however, is to get organic vegetables grown without the use of artificial fertilizers, so it is not worth replanting with soil fertilization.

What to grow?

In the garden you can grow very different vegetables radish, lettuce, arugula, cucumbers, pumpkin, green beans, peas, celery, carrots, parsley, beetroots, potatoes, as well as some fruits – such as strawberries and herbs – such as fennel, basil, coriander, mint, thyme and lovage. After choosing the plants that will be in the backyard garden, it is enough to check in what period they should be sown. Some vegetables can be sown earlier to grow seedlings at home, which will then be in the backyard garden.

Garden development (and time)

Symmetrical patches with a maximum width of 1.2 m are separated in the vegetable garden separated by 30-40 cm wide paths. In this way, you can easily access vegetables during weeding, watering and harvesting.

Harvested vegetables on a regular basis can be consumed on a regular basis, or after cleaning, freeze or otherwise preserve, to be able to use the crop in the autumn and winter. The home garden requires a contribution of work and time – from time to time it needs to be cleaned of weeds and also watered during drought.

Having your own garden gives you many benefits, mainly in the form of fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs, known origin and available at your fingertips. However, in order to get a good yield, you need to spend time and a bit of money for garden development. Fashion for home gardens grows stronger. It is not only about organic crops, but also about the decoration of the plot.
