Turmeric was known already in the seventh century in China. Initially it was used as a dye, but over time, the properties of this spice were also discovered. The wide use of perennials has been appreciated by the Ayurvedic medicine, calling curcuma the spice of life. What is the phenomenon of turmeric? First of all, it is associated with valuable healing properties. Turmeric can successfully replace some medicines in our medicine cabinet. 

Turmeric is mainly associated with Hindu (Indian) cuisine. It was already known in Antiquity. It was not only a component of the dishes, but also because of its intense yellow color was used for make-up or as a component of paints. Kurkuma is also distinguished by its sharp taste and characteristic strong aroma. It is a curry ingredient, it can also be used as a separate spice. Turmeric is a rhizome of the ginger plant family – long-stemmed catfish, also known as the Zohara cowfish, long turmeric, Indian turmeric, turmeric, or Indian saffron. Turmeric – nutritional properties 

The characteristic orange color of turmeric is due to curcumin. Curcumin is a chemical compound with a strong anti-inflammatory effect. Although there is relatively little curcumin in turmeric, its impact on the body is so strong that the spice is effective in fighting viral and bacterial infections and fungal infections. What is important, curcumin also affects disorders in proteins that lead, among others, for cancer and autoimmune diseases. An unquestionable advantage of the spice is that unlike drugs, it only destroys diseased cells, leaves healthy ones intact. 

Curcumin is also being studied as a potential to prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Curcumin is a powerful antioxidant that protects cells against free radicals and oxidative stress. Free radicals accelerate the aging of the skin, the formation of atherosclerotic plaque, damage collagen fibers. Regular consumption of turmeric protects not only the skin against faster destruction, but also has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system, reducing the risk of atherosclerosis or heart attack. Turmeric also affects the removal of toxins from the body and improves the functioning of the digestive tract. 

What is golden milk? 

Golden milk is a drink of curcuma and milk. There are various recipes for gold milk – some assume a version with a mix of turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and water, others in turn suggest that gold milk is only a mixture of the so-called. turmeric paste added to warm milk. It can be both cow’s milk and vegetable milk. Vegan milk will perform here – almond, oat, rice, hemp and spelled. You can also add a pinch of chili, anise or pepper to golden milk. It is worth remembering especially about the latter, because it significantly increases the absorption of turmeric. 

To prepare a turmeric paste, heat the turmeric and water for about 5-8 minutes on medium heat, stirring with a wooden spoon (do not bring to a boil). When it takes the consistency of the paste, it should be put into a jar, it can be stored in the refrigerator for a maximum of 2 weeks. In a glass of warm milk, dissolve 1 teaspoon of paste (preferably start with half a teaspoon). It is worth choosing oily milk for golden milk (minimum 3.2% for cow’s milk), because curcumin is dissolved in fats. If you use a vegetable drink, add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil or clarified butter. You can also add maple syrup or honey to your milk, depending on your preferences, but only when the drink is slightly cool. 

Why is it worth to drink golden milk? 

First of all, it is worth reaching for the cold – golden milk clearly warms up the body and reduces the cough by accelerating the removal of mucus. In addition, turmeric accelerates the removal of microorganisms from the body – studies show that the spice has antibacterial activity. Golden milk has an effect similar to aspirin – it can reduce fever and pain. Turkuma is also recommended for depression as it calms and calms down. You should drink one cup per day with depression, preferably in the evening. With infections and colds you can reach for golden milk more often, even 4-5 times a day.
