Diet for people with Hashimoto’s disease
The menu in the diet of people with Hashimoto’s disease should include increased protein intake, and reduction – carbohydrates. Also important is the high content of fats containing unsaturated fatty acids, especially polyunsaturated fatty acids from the omega-3 group.People suffering from Hashimoto should also take care of the right amount of iodine, zinc, selenium, iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, antioxidants and probiotics. How to implement these recommendations in practice?See our sample menu with recipes.
Hashimoto’s disease – or chronic autoimmune thyroiditis – is a condition in which treating a proper diet plays a very important role. The menu of people from Hashimoto should take into consideration comorbidities, including confirmed allergies and food intolerances. The most frequent intolerances in hypothyroidism and Hashimoto are gluten, egg proteins, cow’s milk and yeast. It should be eaten 4-5 times a day, at regular intervals. The diet should be based on natural, fresh, seasonal and least processed products.Products rich in wholesome protein, carbohydrates with a low glycemic index and fats with a high content of omega-3 acids are recommended.
The caloric value of the diet in Hashimoto’s disease should depend on body weight and be adjusted to physical activity and lifestyle.Thyroid hormones affect the resting metabolism, which is why people with Hashimoto often fight overweight or obesity. The use of a slimming diet should be practiced only after regulating the level of thyroid hormones. The amount of kilocalories in the diet should not be drastically reduced, because it is associated with weaker thyroid activity and further slowing down metabolism.
