Cannabis and sowing as functional food

Functional food is defined as natural food. It may be enriched or modified in such a way as to have a positive effect on the health of the consumer. This impact may consist in reducing the risk of developing civilization diseases, nutritional deficiencies and improving well-being. Functional food resembles that of conventional – there is no form of capsules and tablets.

Functional food from cannabis, deprived of psychoactive addictive substance (THC – tetrahydrocannabinol) and from hemp sowing, improves mood, thanks to the therapeutic content of cannabidole CBD. It helps people suffering from neurosis and sleep disorders, pain, including chronic rheumatic pains, which is further on. In Poland, oil from cannabis containing THC remains illegal. The possession or sale of this product is punishable by imprisonment. THC oil from cannabis can be used in Poland for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Essential oils and extracts containing only cannabidol (CBD) are legal.

Cannabis herb is not medical marijuana

Cannabis in principle contain CBD and THC, while herb hemp contains only cannabidol and can be sold in the form of food products (biscuits with a drought, pills, chewing gum, drinks and so on). In contrast, medical marijuana is cannabis drought, on the basis of which the pharmacist prepares the medicine. Medical marijuana can contain different proportions of THC and CBD and is available only on prescription. In addition to the therapeutic effect, it can also trigger a psychoactive effect. Hence, medical marijuana must come from controlled and organic crops – the pharmacist must be sure about the content of THC and CBD in a portion of the prepared drug.

Controlling the medical crop of marijuana is aimed at reducing the level of undesirable substances in the raw material, such as heavy metals, molds, pesticides and herbicides. The availability of medical marijuana, despite legalizing it in October 2017, is still difficult. There is no question of functional foods containing cannabis. Only products with cannabis seed (CBD) content are available.

Cannabis Sativa L. has been cultivated in Poland for a long time. The THC concentration in their case is below 0.2%. Cannabis is fully legal in Poland and does not cause a psychoactive effect. They also do not have addictive properties. Cannabis is a source of protein, fiber and vitamins and minerals. On the basis of the hemp sowing cosmetics are prepared rich in anti-oxidants, which act against the aging of the skin. Cannabis can improve well-being and health, thanks to the content of cannabidol, therefore as a component of functional food are gradually introduced to the market.

Cannabidol effect

Kannabidol (CBD) is a medicinal substance, safe for health. Kannabidol is not addictive and does not cause intoxication – unlike THC. Cannabidol has anti-psychotic effects, stimulating the nervous system. Cannabidol also has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and analgesic properties as well as antibacterial and antifungal properties. CBD properties have properties helpful in the treatment of civilization and neurodegenerative diseases, of course as an aid to conventional treatment.

Coca Cola wants to produce beverages from CBD

Coca Cola has recently officially announced negotiations with Aurora Cannabis Inc. to start producing CBD marijuana-containing beverages that do not contain THC. The Canadian company mentioned above deals in cannabis breeding. Cannabidol does not work psychoactive, but relieves pain and inflammation. Coca Cola would like to follow in the footsteps of the Corona beer producer (Constelation Brands Inc.), who introduced a cannabidol drink.

There are many indications that cannabinoids (THC, CBD) will become new components of functional foods such as probiotics, omega-3s and flavonoids. In Poland, to make THC a component of functional food is still a long way – as in other countries where marijuana has not been legalized. In the United States, the market for products containing cannabis is worth around 180 million (as of 2016). Over the past five years, the value of this market has been constantly and dynamically increasing. In Europe, the Netherlands has become the pioneer of products based on seed and Indian hemp.

Legalization could solve the problem

The problem with cannabis stems from the fact that there are no legal regulations that would allow cannabis manufacturers and products made on their basis to precisely determine the level of THC and CBD. Legalization of cannabis associated with THC could solve this problem. On the black market, cannabis products are available that do not have exactly the THC level, which leads to a dangerous situation – it is not known whether the dose of THC will not be too large for a given user. Cannabis could become a component of functional food, like cannabis, but without the legalization and control of crops, and the introduction of stringent requirements for products entering the market, this is not possible.
