Asthma may induce obesity
Obesity is known to be one of the risk factors for asthma. Scientific research presented by Dr. Subhabrat Moitra from the Institut de Salut Global in Barcelona (Spain) indicates that there is also a reverse relationship between the two diseases – asthma can lead to obesity.
The latest Spanish study on the relationship between asthma and obesity was presented at the International Congress of the European Respiratory Society, which took place in September 2018. in Paris.
The study involved 8,618 people from 11 European Union countries and Australia.
At the initial stage of testing, none of the participants had obesity, but he suffered from asthma, took medications for this disease and had an asthma attack in the last 12 months. The participants’ health was examined first after 10 and then after 20 years. The analysis took into account the age, sex and physical activity of the subjects.
Research has shown that after 10 years, obesity has been diagnosed in about 10 percent. and after another decade in the next 8 percent. respondents. The relationship between asthma and the risk of obesity was greater in people who developed adult asthma and in those who did not have allergic asthma.
Obesity as a risk factor for asthma has been recognized for a long time.
It causes many physiological, metabolic and inflammatory changes that promote asthma. The Spanish study, however, shows that inverse dependence is possible. However, it is not clear whether the very occurrence of asthma is associated with a greater risk of obesity, whether the methods of treating asthma affect this relationship.
